A woman charged with killing six of her own babies has admitted to police that she strangled or suffocated the infants and left them in boxes in the garage of her former home.
Megan Huntsman, 39, claimed that between 1996 and 2006 she gave birth to seven babies at home and all but one was born alive, a police statement said.
Hunstman, of Utah, said she killed each baby immediately after birth. Each child was wrapped in either a towel or a shirt, placed in a plastic bag and then put in a box.
Her estranged husband Darren West found the first body in the garage before alerting police. Officers then found six more tiny bodies on Saturday.
Mr West, whose parents own the house where the shocking discovery was made, is believed to have been Huntsman’s partner when the children were born.
Police spokesman Michael Roberts said: “We don’t believe he had any knowledge of the situation.”
Asked how his wife could give birth to seven children without him knowing, Mr Roberts replied: “That’s the million-dollar question – amazing.”
He said police officers “got more and more shocked with each box they opened”.
The bodies have been sent to a medical examiner for testing.
DNA samples taken from Huntsman and her ex-husband will be used to confirm the identity of the parents.
On Sunday, Mr West’s family said they were in a “state of shock and confusion.”
Huntsman had moved out of the house around three years ago,
She had three daughters, a teenager and two adults, who had continued to live there.
The daughters seemed “normal”, according to neighbour Vickie Nelson.
They did not seem to know their mother was pregnant or notice anything suspicious, neighbours said.
Huntsman is being held at Utah County Jail on six counts of murder. Her bail has been set at $6million dollars – a million for each child.
